Halyburton Park is managed by the City of Wilmington, NC and is located on S. 17th St. beyond Cameron Art Museum and just before you get to S. College Road. Halyburton has a smooth paved 1.3 mile loop trail through the pine forest with off-road hiking trails through the middle of the loop.

Halyburton is a favorite destination for families because of the two playgrounds, swingset, picnic shelters, and smaller paved loop that runs around the playgrounds ideal for bike riding, scooters, skateboards, and sidewalk chalk art. Visitors to the park will often find joggers, rollerbladers, bikers, parents pushing strollers, couples, friends & families going for a walk or bike ride, dog walkers, and even stoller exercise classes. It is a great place to take in the outdoors in a friendly and non-intimidating way.

Programs at Halyburton Park

In addition to the free, outdoor resources offered at Halyburton Park, the City of Wilmington runs a number of Nature Programs for kids, families, and adults. They have a prechool program to teach kids about the things and animals they find in nature. The leader reads a story then bring the kids outside on a nature walk to look for plants and animals to go with the day’s theme. Then they head back inside to do a relevant craft. Sometimes the leader brings out animals, such as turtles and snakes, for the kids to see up close.

For older kids, Halyburton hosts school and group field trips with a full educational curriculum as well as weekend workshops focusing on plants and animals living in the park.

Adults can participate in nature workshops with themes such as birding, wildflowers, and coastal wildlife. Halyburton staff members also lead kayak tours throughout the region. One popular such tour is the Full Moon Kayak Trip to Rice and Town Creek along the Cape Fear River complete with a campfire and s’mores!

In addition to these outdoor nature programs, the City of Wilmington also runs indoor fitness classes including Yoga and Pilates. These are organized into ten week sessions and the cost works out to a minimal $6.50 per class.

Halyburton Park has a beautiful Events Center where classes and workshops are held. There is a great gift shop in the lobby where kids have endless fun looking at all the cool toys and real live turtles and fish. The Center can also be rented out for parties, business meetings, and weddings. If the Events Center is not quite what you need, the picnic shelters can be reserved for 4 hour blocks of time and are great for birthday parties or family reunions. Each has a charcoal grill available for use.

Halyburton hosts community events throughout the year including a fall festival with a hayride around the long loop, live music, and booth displays from local organizations. Additionally, the Wilmington Cross City Trail is being completed linking the trails of Halyburton to the greater Wilmington area, connecting directly with the Cameron Art Museum and Independence Blvd.

Wilmington residents and visitors love Halyburton Park for one or all of the amenities offered here. We encourage you to check it out. There’s something to see, do, and learn for every season!

Hi: I am interested in the birding trips sponsored by Halyburton Park and lead by Andy Fairbanks.
I do not see those trips posted on your website. Please supply me with information.
